Military Resources for Students and Families in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce offers a variety of resources and programs for military families and veterans, including:

  • Military-Connected Youth Supports: Includes tools to help military families enroll in Ohio schools, the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, and the Purple Star Schools program
  • Ohio Military Veteran Educators Program: Encourages veterans, service members, and military spouses to become K-12 teachers in Ohio
  • Military Recruit Award: Provides financial incentives for military individuals and their spouses to work in Ohio K-12 schools
  • Purple Star Award program: Recognizes schools that are committed to serving military-connected students and families

The WILMAR Scholarship

The Wilmar Scholarship was established to recognize the service, contributions and sacrifice that military and other safety forces members make to the locations in which they serve and to their families. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a 1st through 8th grade student based on the student having an immediate family member in either the military or police, fire or paramedics/EMS, and through an essay on what it means to have an immediate family member who is in one of these professions. Students selected as recipients of the scholarship will be announced at the Catholic Schools Week Mass at St. John Vianney in January.

Ohio Military Veteran Educators Program

The Ohio Military Veteran Educators Program (OhioMVEP) assists service members, military veterans, and their spouses with starting a career in an Ohio school. Contact Ohiomvep@education.ohio.gov with any questions.

Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children

The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children is a set of state laws in all 50 states that lowers barriers to education and eases the transition of military-connected students. MIC3Training.net offers access to on-demand training on the Compact. Live Compact 101 webinar trainings are available every month online and are free.
